Self-funded path
Study in China self-funded: no scholarship needed
Direct admission is faster, less competitive, and open all year at most universities. Here's what it realistically costs in 2026, how to apply, and when it's the right choice.
Who this suits
- You missed the CSC deadline (typically closes January–April) and don't want to wait a full year.
- You want a guaranteed admission decision instead of a competitive scholarship result.
- You're targeting a field with very limited scholarship seats: most notably English-taught MBBS / clinical medicine.
- You have family funding and want to prioritise choice of university and start date over cost.
Typical annual costs (2026)
These are typical ranges across the current university list: always verify the exact fee on the university's own admission page before applying.
| Program type | Tuition (CNY/year) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| MBBS / Clinical medicine (English) | 30,000 – 55,000 | MOE-approved universities only. Higher at top-tier schools. |
| Engineering / Business | 20,000 – 35,000 | English-taught masters often at the higher end. |
| Arts, humanities, language | 15,000 – 25,000 | Chinese-language programs are usually the cheapest. |
| On-campus accommodation | 4,000 – 12,000 | Shared room cheapest; single with A/C highest. |
Living costs on top: roughly CNY 2,000–4,000/month depending on city. Insurance around CNY 800/year is usually mandatory.
How direct admission works
- Apply on the SAME university portals we already link in the university directory. There is no CSC/CGS portal step.
- Decisions are faster: often 2–6 weeks vs 3–5 months for the CSC route.
- Two main intakes: September (most programs) and March (many universities, especially language and some MBBS tracks).
- Pay the application fee (around CNY 400–800), receive Admission Notice + JW202, then apply for the X1 student visa.
Documents you'll need (much lighter than CSC)
- Passport (valid 18+ months)
- Academic transcripts
- Highest diploma / degree
- Physical exam form (Foreigner Physical Examination Record)
- Bank statement showing ability to pay (usually 1 year of tuition + living)
- Passport photo + short personal statement
No study plan, no research proposal, no CSC recommendation letters required for most undergraduate self-funded applications.
Studying MBBS in English: read this first
- Only choose universities on the MOE-approved list for English-taught MBBS. The list is updated yearly by China's Ministry of Education.
- Be very sceptical of agents promising "guaranteed medical licenses" in your home country: no agent controls a national medical council.
- Check your home country's medical council recognition of the specific university before paying any fees.
Self-funded vs CSC scholarship: honest comparison

| Admission chance | High: most qualified applicants accepted | Competitive: award rates vary |
| Decision speed | 2–6 weeks | 3–5 months |
| Intake months | September AND March | Mostly September only |
| Programs available | All (including MBBS) | Limited seats in MBBS / clinical fields |

Frequently asked
Can I switch to a scholarship later?
Sometimes. Many Chinese universities allow self-funded students to apply for provincial or university scholarships from year 2 onward based on GPA, HSK level, and attendance. It is not guaranteed and rules differ per school: confirm with the international students office before enrolling and treat any switch as a bonus, not a plan.
Do self-funded students need HSK?
Not for English-taught programs. MBBS, most engineering, and international business tracks are delivered in English and do not require HSK for admission. If you plan to study a Chinese-taught program you will typically need HSK 4 (undergraduate) or HSK 5 (graduate). Many universities still offer a free Chinese language course to English-track students.
Is MBBS taught in English recognized in my country?
It depends entirely on your home country's medical council. China's Ministry of Education (MOE) publishes an approved list of universities allowed to teach MBBS in English to international students: only choose from that list. Then verify with your national medical council (e.g. PMC, NMC, ECFMG, GMC, etc.) that graduates from that specific university are eligible to sit the licensing exam. Do this BEFORE you enrol, not after.
