Quick answer

Compare Guangzhou programmes and campuses, verify housing and costs, plan transport and complete arrival steps using current official sources.

1.Which Guangzhou universities and campuses should I compare?

Start with the exact programme, teaching language and named campus. Guangzhou is not one student location. Sun Yat-sen University, South China University of Technology, Jinan University, South China Normal University and Guangdong University of Foreign Studies have different academic strengths, admissions rules and campus locations.

South China University of Technology's current university page lists Wushan, University Town and Guangzhou International campuses at separate Guangzhou addresses. South China Normal University's 2026 undergraduate guide likewise places programmes at its Shipai or University Town campus, while its other campuses are outside Guangzhou. Confirm the campus before comparing travel, housing or daily costs. Start with the Sun Yat-sen University profile and the university directory.

2.How should I verify a Guangzhou programme before applying?

Use the current notice for the exact intake and degree. Sun Yat-sen University's 2026 undergraduate guide says students must register on the date and at the location in the admission letter. South China Normal University's 2026 guide lists four undergraduate programmes, their teaching languages and campus assignments, and warns that offerings can change annually.

Guangdong University of Foreign Studies uses its own process. Its 2026 degree-student notice gives a March 1 to June 20 application period and tells applicants to confirm the online submission with the admissions office. These are university-specific examples, not Guangzhou-wide deadlines or document rules. Save the notice for your intake and verify the programme name, language, campus, tuition, scholarship route and responsible admissions contact before paying.

3.Is there one reliable housing or living-cost figure for Guangzhou?

No. A useful budget must be tied to the university, campus, programme and room type. South China Normal University's 2026 undergraduate guide lists limited on-campus rooms at CNY 10,000 per semester for a single room and CNY 5,000 per semester for a bunk-bed double room. Guangdong University of Foreign Studies lists different figures in its 2026 pre-university notice: CNY 4,800 per semester for a double room and CNY 2,400 for a four-person room, while stating that a bed cannot be guaranteed.

Those figures apply to the named university notices and should not be transferred to another campus or private rental. Before accepting an offer, ask for written confirmation of the campus, room type, bed availability, payment period, utilities, deposit, insurance and move-in date. Keep separate totals for university charges and personal spending.

4.How should I plan for Guangzhou weather and transport?

Plan around heat, rain and the campus you will actually attend. Sun Yat-sen University's 2026 programme guide describes Guangdong's subtropical climate, gives April to September as the rainy season and advises students to bring rain gear during the warmer months. Treat that as practical orientation from one university, then check current weather warnings when travelling.

For transport, Guangzhou's transport authority reported that the city's urban rail network reached 805.9 kilometres at the end of 2025 and said operating arrangements are adjusted around passenger demand and major transport hubs (official 2026 service report). Network size does not tell you whether a campus commute is convenient. Map the route from the named campus to the confirmed accommodation, and recheck current service notices before arrival.

5.Which arrival steps matter for long-term study in Guangzhou?

Follow the admission letter and the university's current orientation instructions. Sun Yat-sen University's 2026 undergraduate guide says registration must be completed at the stated date and location, and late registration without prior approval can be treated as withdrawal.

The National Immigration Administration says a person whose visa requires a residence permit after entry should apply to the local exit-entry authority within 30 days. Its study residence-permit guide also identifies the university letter and admission or enrolment document needed for a study residence permit. Keep the passport, visa, admission notice, any JW form issued, accommodation confirmation, health-check instructions and university contact details together. Use the first 30 days guide for the broader sequence, while letting the university's current instructions control.

6.Can I work part time while studying in Guangzhou?

Student status does not permit unrestricted employment. The Ministry of Education's work-study measures describe authorised work-study as university-organised and managed activity, with general term-time limits of 8 hours per week and 40 hours per month. The National Immigration Administration says off-campus work-study or an internship requires school approval and the location and duration to be recorded on the residence permit.

Ask the international-student office to classify any proposed role before you accept it and to confirm the required approvals in writing. When choosing among offers, compare the exact programme, teaching language, named campus, tuition, confirmed accommodation, scholarship terms, insurance and arrival date.

If you want help turning verified offers into a practical shortlist, the $50 shortlisting session compares your documented options without submitting applications or promising admission or funding.
