Quick answer

Compare Xi'an programmes and campuses, verify housing and costs from the admitting university, and complete arrival steps without citywide assumptions.

1.Which Xi'an universities and programmes should I compare?

Start with the exact degree, teaching language, campus, tuition, accommodation availability and admissions route, rather than treating Xi'an as one programme. Xi'an Jiaotong University, Northwestern Polytechnical University, Xidian University, Northwest University and Shaanxi Normal University have different academic strengths and their own international-admissions rules.

Northwestern Polytechnical University's 2026 undergraduate guide lists international programmes and states that admitted applicants cannot change their programme, major, teaching language or study period. Treat that as an example of why you should verify those points before applying, not as a citywide rule. Start with the Xi'an Jiaotong University profile and the university directory.

2.Can I use one Xi'an budget or housing figure for every university?

No. Budget and housing evidence is campus-specific. Xi'an Jiaotong University's current English-taught programme brochure gives its own indicative accommodation, meals, transport, insurance and living-expense examples, and explicitly says actual expenses vary by housing type, lifestyle and personal habits. Those figures should not be transferred to another university or degree.

Before accepting an offer, obtain the current fee table for your named programme and ask which campus would host you, whether a dormitory is available, the room type, payment timing, insurance and refundable deposits. Compare the documented total rather than relying on a generic Xi'an monthly estimate.

3.How should I arrange accommodation in Xi'an?

Ask the admitting university for a written answer on campus accommodation for your intake, the assigned campus, room type, rate, move-in date and any approval needed before living off campus. Do not assume an admission offer includes a dormitory.

At Xi'an Jiaotong University, the international-student accommodation regulations set a specific process for students seeking off-campus accommodation. That is a university rule, not a rule for every Xi'an institution, but it shows why accommodation changes must be cleared with the relevant international-student office. Keep your accommodation confirmation with your arrival documents and follow the steps issued by your own university.

4.What is the practical way to plan transport in Xi'an?

Plan from your confirmed campus and address. Xi'an's municipal government reports current metro service developments and passenger-service notices, including a 2026 Metro update. Use the operator's current route and service information when you arrive, because service arrangements and the best station depend on your campus and accommodation.

Save the route between your accommodation, campus and the nearest major rail or airport connection before your first week. Budget the current adult fare unless the transit authority or university confirms a discount that applies to your card.

5.Which arrival paperwork matters most for long-term study?

Follow your admission notice, university orientation instructions and visa documents in the order and dates they give. The National Immigration Administration says a person whose visa requires a residence permit should apply at the local exit-entry authority within 30 days after entry, and an X1 student needs the university's letter describing the study term plus an admission or enrolment document (official guide).

Keep your passport, visa, admission notice, any JW form issued, accommodation confirmation, health-check instructions, receipts and university contact details together. For the broader sequence, use the first 30 days in China guide, then let your own university's current notice control.

6.Can I work part time while studying in Xi'an?

Do not treat student status as permission for unrestricted work. The National Immigration Administration says a student who wants an off-campus part-time job or internship must have school approval and obtain the relevant location and duration remarks on the residence permit; without those remarks, off-campus work or internships are not allowed (official guide). This is a national rule, not an Xi'an shortcut.

Before agreeing to a role, ask your international-student office which activity is permitted, which documents it needs and whether your residence-permit record must be updated. Compare verified offers in one sheet: programme, language, named campus, tuition, confirmed accommodation, scholarship terms, insurance, arrival date and admissions contact.

If you want help turning verified offers into a practical shortlist, the $50 shortlisting session compares your documented options without submitting applications or promising admission or funding.
