Living in Nanjing as an International Student

Nanjing is a university city, but a city name is not a programme comparison. Start with the course, language of instruction, campus, tuition, accommodation availability and the admissions route at each institution. Nanjing University, Southeast University, Nanjing Agricultural University, Nanjing Medical University and Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology serve different academic interests and use their own admissions processes.

NUIST publishes an English-medium programme list, while Nanjing Medical University's 2026 notice is a programme-specific tuition reference, not a citywide price. Use the university's current international-admissions page as the controlling source for the course you want. CSC applicants should also confirm the correct route and agency number with the intended university before submitting.

No. A reliable Nanjing budget starts with a named programme and campus, not a generic city average. Tuition, dorm assignment, room type, meal habits, insurance, local transport and deposits can vary within the same university. For example, Nanjing Medical University publishes a 2026 MBBS tuition figure, but that is evidence for that programme only and should not be used to price a different degree.

Before accepting an offer, request or locate the current fee table and write down tuition, accommodation, insurance, application fee, residence-permit expenses, meal and transport allowance, and any refundable deposit. Keep screenshots or PDFs dated for your intake. Compare the total, not just a scholarship headline.

Ask the admitting university whether it can offer campus accommodation for your intake, which campus the room is on, the room type and rate, move-in date, payment method, and whether an off-campus address requires approval. Do not assume that an offer letter includes a dorm room or that a citywide rental estimate will fit your campus location.

Your registered address matters after arrival. Nanjing Agricultural University's current visa guidance distinguishes the JW201/JW202 route for study longer than 180 days from the DQ form for shorter study, so read the instructions from your admitting university and the Chinese visa office serving your location. Use the Nanjing Metro official website to check the current network, service notices, route changes and fare information for the campus and address you actually have. Save the nearest station and a backup route before your first week, especially if your university has more than one campus.

Budget full adult fares unless your school or the transit authority confirms a discount that applies to your student card. Set up a payment method only after you know which options are available to a newly arrived international student.

Follow the dates and steps in your own admission notice, university orientation instructions and visa documents. Long-term study normally involves campus registration, accommodation confirmation, the required medical steps where applicable, residence-permit processing and local address registration. Do not delay a step because another student's timeline was different.

Keep a folder containing your passport, visa, admission notice, JW form where issued, university contact details, accommodation confirmation, receipts and copies of submitted forms. If a requirement is unclear, ask the university international-student office in writing and retain its answer.

Do not treat a scholarship or student status as permission for unrestricted work. The Ministry of Education's work-study policy sets limits for authorised work-study activity and requires the university and exit-entry process for off-campus activity. It does not create a city-specific shortcut for Nanjing.

Start with your international-student office before agreeing to any paid role or internship. Ask whether the activity is allowed, what documents it needs, whether a residence-permit annotation is required, and which hours apply to your programme.
