- Language: Chinese-taught bachelor's programmes require HSK Level 4 at 210 points or above, and Chinese Language and Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages additionally require HSKK Intermediate at 60 points or above. Chinese-taught master's programmes: HSK Level 5 at 180 points for literature, history and philosophy, HSK Level 5 at 210 points plus HSKK Intermediate at 60 for the master's in International Chinese Language Education, and HSK Level 4 at 210 points for all other subjects; applicants whose previous degree was taught in Chinese are exempt. Chinese-taught doctoral programmes: literature requires HSK Level 5 at 180 plus HSKK Intermediate at 50, history requires HSK Level 5 at 180, and other subjects require HSK Level 4 at 210. English-taught programmes require IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL 80, with exemptions for native English speakers and for applicants whose previous degree was taught in English. Applicants without the required HSK certificate must complete one to two years of Chinese language study before beginning their subject programme.. Age: Bachelor's applicants must be no more than 25 years old and hold a senior high school certificate; master's applicants must hold a bachelor's degree and be no more than 35; doctoral applicants must hold a master's degree and be no more than 40. International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship applicants must be 16 to 35 as at 1 September 2026, relaxed to 45 for serving Chinese-language teachers, and normally no more than 25 for bachelor's applicants.. Required degree: Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens in good physical and mental health. Nationality is assessed under the Nationality Law and Ministry of Education document 教外函〔2020〕12号: applicants born outside China who held foreign nationality at birth must show a parent who is a Chinese citizen held foreign permanent residence before the applicant's birth and that the applicant lived abroad for at least two years between 30 June 2022 and 29 June 2026; applicants who were formerly Chinese citizens must have acquired foreign nationality and completed renunciation of Chinese nationality before 30 June 2022 and also show two years of actual residence abroad over the same period. Nine months of actual residence abroad counts as one year.
