CSC Agency Number: How to Find the Correct Code

A CSC agency number identifies the application receiving agency in the Chinese Government Scholarship Information System. It routes the application to the authority responsible for that scholarship channel. It is not your application number, a scholarship result, or proof that a university will nominate you.

The Chinese Mission to the European Union's CSC online application instructions define the agency number as representing a specific application receiving agency. The same instructions warn that an incorrect number can prevent the application from continuing or being accepted.

The practical rule is simple: copy the agency number from the current official notice controlling your route. Do not take a code from an old list, a social post, or a different university's notice.

The program category and agency number work as a pair. A current CGSIS guide published by Yunnan University of Finance and Economics says the matched agency name appears automatically after the number is entered. It also says the processing authority will not receive the online application if either the category or agency number is incorrect (official 2026 guide).

In the routes most applicants encounter:

• Type A uses the agency number stated by the embassy, ministry, or other dispatching authority running that country or program route.
• Type B uses the agency number stated by the Chinese university running the university route.
• Other programs can publish their own category and receiving agency. Follow that program's current notice rather than treating Type A or Type B as a universal shortcut.

Do not assume that every agency number has five visible digits. For example, the Chinese Embassy in the Federated States of Micronesia published 5831 for its 2026-2027 route (official embassy notice), while an official CSC instruction hosted by the Chinese Mission to the EU shows 00006 for its own receiving agency. Copy leading zeros exactly when the notice includes them.

Start with the current scholarship announcement from the Chinese embassy, education ministry, scholarship secretariat, or other dispatching authority named for your country. A Type A application is routed to that authority, so a target university's Type B number is not a substitute.

Use this order:

1. Open the current intake notice for your country or program. 2. Confirm that it tells you to select Type A. 3. Copy the agency number exactly as printed. 4. Check that CGSIS displays the expected authority after entry. 5. Follow any separate national portal, nomination, test, interview, or document-submission instructions in the same notice.

The University of Shanghai for Science and Technology's current applicant guide advises Type A applicants to verify the agency number and deadline directly with the dispatching authority, normally the Chinese embassy or consulate for that route (official guide). If no current number is published, ask the named authority in writing instead of guessing. Use the university's current Chinese Government Scholarship notice for the exact intake and program. The number should appear beside the Type B instruction. Current official examples include:

• Beihang University: Type B, agency number 10006 in its 2026 High-Level Postgraduate guide (official Q&A).
• Xiamen University: Type B, agency number 10384 in its 2026 University Program guide (official guide).
• Southwest University: Type B, agency number 10635 in its 2026-2027 Silk Road Program notice (official notice).
• Guangxi Medical University: Type B, agency number 10598 in its 2026 postgraduate notice (official notice).

These examples prove only the routes and intakes stated in those notices. A code does not prove that every degree, teaching language, or applicant category is eligible. Check the program list, deadline, language rules, and any required university portal at the same time. Start with the CSC Path university directory, then confirm every field on the university's current official admissions page.

Do not assume that two codes are interchangeable just because they look similar. In many Type B notices, the published agency number is a five-digit number associated with the university. But CGSIS uses it as a receiving-agency identifier for the stated application route.

That distinction matters because:

• Type A numbers belong to dispatching authorities, not necessarily to a target university.
• A university can publish different scholarship programs, and only the current notice tells you which category and number to use.
• A familiar university number does not prove that the university is accepting your degree or scholarship route in the current intake.
• Leading zeros are part of the value when the official notice prints them.

After entering the number, compare the agency name shown by CGSIS with the name in the notice. If they do not match, stop and verify the category and number with the receiving authority before submitting.

Complete this short check before clicking Submit:

• The notice is for the correct intake and has not been replaced by a newer version.
• The scholarship program and your degree or applicant category are eligible.
• The program category matches the route named in the notice.
• The agency number is copied exactly, including any leading zeros.
• The agency name displayed by CGSIS is the one you expected.
• You completed every additional portal required by the receiving authority.
• The application form, uploads, and contact details are accurate.
• You saved the official notice and a copy of the submitted form.

Some university routes require both CGSIS and the university's own portal. Beihang's 2026 guide says registration in both systems is required for its program, and Xiamen's guide also requires a separate university application. Act before the receiving authority processes the application if the portal still permits correction. The 2026 CGSIS instructions published by Yunnan University of Finance and Economics say an applicant can withdraw and edit a submitted application before it is processed, but must submit it again after editing. The same instructions say it cannot be withdrawn through that flow after processing.

Use this safe sequence:

1. Save a copy of the current submission and the official notice showing the correct code. 2. Check whether CGSIS still offers the withdrawal or editing option. 3. If you edit, submit the application again and download the new form. 4. Update any copy uploaded to the university or national portal. 5. Tell the receiving authority what changed and ask it to confirm receipt. 6. If the application has already been processed, contact the authority before creating another application or assuming it can be corrected.
