GKS Scholarship 2027: Application Guide, Deadlines and Both Tracks
By CSC Path Editorial, checked against official CSC and university sources.
A step by step walkthrough of the GKS 2027 application: what NIIED asks for, which documents need an apostille, how to choose between the embassy and university tracks, and what the three selection rounds actually test. Dates are anchored to the verified 2026 cycle, since NIIED has not published the 2027 guidelines yet.
1.When do GKS 2027 applications open and close?
As of late July 2026, NIIED has not published the 2027 guidelines for either program. GKS runs on a fixed annual rhythm, though, so the 2026 dates are a reliable planning anchor. Check the GKS notice board on studyinkorea.go.kr before you commit to any date below.
Undergraduate (GKS-U), the 2027 intake, is the urgent one. In the 2026 cycle the online application ran from 11:00 KST on Monday 15 September 2025 to 18:00 KST on Tuesday 30 September 2025 for the embassy track, and stayed open until 18:00 KST on Friday 31 October 2025 for the university track (2026 GKS-U guidelines; Korean embassy notice). Based on that pattern, expect the 2027 GKS-U guidelines around early September 2026, an embassy window of roughly two weeks in mid to late September 2026, and a university track window through late October 2026. That is about six weeks away from today, which is why your apostille work should start now.
Graduate (GKS-G) comes later. The 2026 graduate round ran from 11:00 KST on Thursday 12 February to 18:00 KST on Wednesday 25 February 2026 for the embassy track, with university track deadlines set individually by each university between February and April (2026 GKS-G guidelines). Expect the 2027 graduate round to open in mid February 2027 on the same two week embassy window.
The two cycles also finish at different times. GKS-U 2026 scholars were announced on 9 January 2026 and entered Korea shortly after; GKS-G 2026 scholars were announced in late June 2026 with entry in August (Korean embassy notice). If you want the background on benefits and eligibility rules before working through this guide, start with the full GKS overview.
2.What documents does the GKS 2027 application actually require?
NIIED splits your file into two piles, and the distinction matters because only one pile needs authentication.
Pile one: forms you complete in the Study in Korea system. For the 2026 undergraduate round these were Form 1 Application Form, Form 2 Personal Statement, Form 3 Study Plan, Form 4 Recommender's Information, Form 5 GKS Applicant Agreement and Form 6 Personal Medical Assessment. You fill them in online, then print and hand sign the signature fields. The sealed recommendation letter itself is only submitted by candidates who pass the first screening.
Pile two: certificates issued by someone else. Proof of citizenship and family relationship for you and both parents (birth certificate or family register), your high school graduation certificate or certificate of expected graduation, and your full high school transcript. Associate degree holders add their degree certificate and transcript. Optional additions: proof of Overseas Korean status, proof of Korean citizenship renunciation, proof of Korean War veteran descent, a valid TOPIK or TOEFL or IELTS score report, awards, and a passport copy (2026 GKS-U guidelines).
The graduate list is longer: ten forms rather than six, including a Consent to Collect and Use Personal Information and, for research applicants, a Research Proposal and a Letter of Invitation from the host university. Master's applicants submit a bachelor's certificate and transcript; doctoral applicants add the master's certificate and transcript (2026 GKS-G guidelines).
Two details that quietly disqualify people: your English name on every form must match your passport exactly, including middle names, and you may only name universities and departments that appear in the official University Information file attached to the GKS Notice post. Writing a department that is not on that list can get your application excluded from evaluation.
3.Which documents need an apostille, and which do not?
This is where most rejected files fail, and the rule is narrower than people assume.
- Forms you complete yourself do not need an apostille. NIIED states this explicitly: application form, personal statement, study plan, agreement, medical assessment and the recommendation documents are submitted as one original with your handwritten signature, with no authentication.
- Required certificates do need an apostille or consular confirmation. That means proof of citizenship and family relationship, graduation certificates and transcripts. Submit one authenticated copy of each.
- If your country is in the Apostille Convention, use an apostille. Graduation certificates and academic transcripts may alternatively be submitted with consular confirmation.
- Documents in a language other than English or Korean need a certified translation, and the apostille or consular confirmation can sit on either the original or the certified translation.
- Digitally issued certificates still need authentication. An online-issued transcript is not exempt.
- Photocopies of an apostilled document are not accepted. The only exceptions are a certified true copy issued by a Korean embassy or by the same government agency that issued the original apostille.
- If a document cannot be reissued, keep the original and get the apostille or consular confirmation placed on a notarized copy.
- Validity window: if the authentication shows no expiry date, it is accepted within two years of the authentication date (2026 GKS-U guidelines).
One more trap for applicants still in school. A certificate of expected graduation is accepted only if it states an expected graduation date or month. A plain enrollment certificate with no date is rejected. If your government will not apostille an expected graduation certificate, NIIED accepts an apostilled certificate of enrollment paired with a notarized expected graduation certificate. Expected graduates then have a hard deadline for the real diploma: in the 2026 undergraduate cycle it was 31 December 2025, and in the 2026 graduate cycle it was 31 July 2026. Miss it and your acceptance is cancelled.
Practical advice: order several authenticated sets of your graduation certificate before you leave home. NIIED warns that scholars need separate authenticated copies for the university's admission letter, for the visa, and for immigration in Korea, and none of your submitted documents are ever returned.
4.Embassy track or university track: which one should you pick?
You may only apply through one track per cycle, and applying to both voids your application. The decision comes down to three things: how many places your country gets, how many universities you can name, and how many rounds you have to survive.
Quota size is the first filter. The 2026 undergraduate round offered 280 places total: 150 through the embassy track across 71 countries (82 general, 7 overseas Korean, 61 R-GKS) and 130 through the university track (100 for the University Industry Cooperation programme, 30 for associate degrees). Most countries had one or two general embassy seats. Bangladesh, Cambodia, Chile, Colombia, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Rwanda and Timor-Leste had two general seats; the rest of the 71 countries had one. That is brutally thin. The graduate round is far larger: 2,000 places in 2026, of which 800 went to the embassy track (776 general across 143 countries and regions) and 1,200 to the university track.
How many universities you can name is the second filter. Embassy track applicants choose up to three universities. University track applicants name exactly one university and one department, so your whole cycle rests on a single admissions committee.
The number of rounds is the third, and the most misunderstood. Embassy track runs three rounds: the embassy screens and interviews you, NIIED evaluates, and then all three of your chosen universities review you separately. If all three reject you at that final stage, you are disqualified even though you passed NIIED. University track runs only two rounds: the university screens you, NIIED evaluates, and you are done. There is no third university stage, because the university already selected you.
The sequencing gives you a second chance. NIIED deliberately staggers the calendar so that applicants who fail the embassy first round can reapply through the university track. In 2026, embassy results were out by 17 October while the university track stayed open until 31 October. But this only works if you actually failed: embassy track candidates who passed the first round, including reserve candidates, are barred from reapplying.
Rule of thumb. If your country has one or two general seats and you do not have an unusually strong profile, the university track odds are often better, especially for the graduate round where 1,200 of the 2,000 places sit there. If you want a shot at a top Seoul university and you have TOPIK 3 or higher plus a strong academic record, the embassy track three-university spread is worth the extra round.
5.How should you choose your three universities and handle the Type B rule?
GKS sorts participating universities into Type A (mostly large Seoul institutions) and Type B (regional universities). For the 2026 undergraduate embassy track there were 30 Type A institutions; the 2026 graduate list had 35 Type A and 41 Type B (2026 GKS-G guidelines).
The rules for the 2026 cycle, which are stable year to year:
- General and Overseas Korean embassy track applicants pick up to three universities, and at least one must be Type B. Putting a Type A university in the Type B slot can get your application excluded from evaluation.
- R-GKS applicants pick up to two universities, all from Type B.
- You cannot pick three different departments at a single university.
- University track applicants name one university and one department.
NIIED itself warns about the strategy failure here: if you fill all three slots with highly competitive universities, you can pass the NIIED round and still be rejected by all three in the final university round, which disqualifies you entirely. Treat your Type B pick as a genuine choice you would accept, not as a throwaway. Regional national universities such as Pusan National, Kyungpook National, Chonnam National and Jeonbuk National are well funded research institutions, and their GKS applicant pools are much shallower than Korea University or Yonsei.
One more constraint before you build a shortlist: individual departments can set enrolment requirements above the GKS baseline. All scholars must reach TOPIK level 3 to move from the language year into the degree, but some departments demand TOPIK 4. If you fail to meet a departmental requirement and cannot enroll, your scholarship is cancelled. Check each department's page before you name it.
6.How do NIIED's selection rounds actually work?
Both programs run the same architecture. Here is the 2026 undergraduate calendar in full, which is the template to expect for 2027 shifted forward by roughly a year:
Embassy track, 2026 cycle - Online application: 15 to 30 September 2025 - First round result (embassy screening and interview): by 17 October 2025 - Successful candidates' documents arrive at NIIED: by 31 October 2025 - Second round result (NIIED evaluation): within November 2025 - Third round result (your three universities): by 18:00 on 26 December 2025 - Notify NIIED of your final university choice: by 18:00 on 2 January 2026 - Final scholar announcement: 9 January 2026
University track, 2026 cycle - Online application: 15 September to 31 October 2025 - First round result (university screening): by 18:00 on 14 November 2025 - Documents arrive at NIIED: by 28 November 2025 - Second round result (NIIED evaluation): by mid December 2025 - Final scholar announcement: 9 January 2026
The graduate calendar is the same shape on a spring timetable: application 12 to 25 February 2026, embassy results 17 March, documents at NIIED by 1 April, NIIED round in early May, university round by 6 June, final university choice by 18:00 on 12 June, and final announcement in late June.
Three procedural facts worth internalising. First, NIIED never contacts applicants individually about round results; you check the notice board and the My Page section of the Study in Korea system yourself. Second, reasons for passing or failing are never disclosed. Third, once you accept and then renounce the award, you are permanently barred from reapplying to GKS, and repeated renunciations from one country can cost that country its future quota.
7.How is your application scored, and what earns extra points?
NIIED evaluates in two layers: a qualification review (citizenship, education level, grades) and a competency review through documents plus an oral interview.
Baseline eligibility for 2026, which sets the 2027 expectation. Undergraduate applicants had to be under 25, born after 1 March 2001; for the 2027 intake expect the cutoff to shift to born on or after 1 March 2002, but confirm against the published guidelines. Graduate applicants had to be under 40, born after 1 September 1986, with a raised limit of under 45 for current academic professors from countries on the OECD DAC list of ODA recipients. Grades for both: CGPA of at least 2.64/4.0, 2.80/4.3, 2.91/4.5 or 3.23/5.0, or 80 percent or above on a 100 point scale, or ranked in the top 20 percent of your class.
Explicit bonus points in the 2026 undergraduate round: - TOPIK level 3 or above: 10 percent of total allocated points - Direct descendants of Korean War veterans who served as foreign military: 5 percent - Applicants to science and engineering departments: 5 percent
Language proficiency is scored on its own scale. TOPIK level 5 or 6 scores 100 percent of the language points; level 4, or TOEFL iBT 114 and above, or IELTS 8.0 and above scores 90 percent; level 3, or TOEFL iBT 95, or IELTS 7.0 scores 80 percent. If you submit no language test at all, your personal statement and study plan are reviewed in its place (2026 GKS-U guidelines).
Stated preferences that tip close calls: overseas Koreans, applicants from low income or underprivileged backgrounds, science and engineering applicants, strong TOEFL or IELTS scores, majors linked to regional RISE plans or specialised local industries, and applicants recommended by a mayor or provincial governor.
The practical takeaway: a TOPIK level 3 certificate is the single highest leverage thing you can add before the deadline. It is worth 10 percent of your total points, it scores 80 percent on the language scale, and TOPIK 5 or 6 exempts you from the language year entirely while still paying you a Korean proficiency grant.
8.Month by month: what should you do between now and the deadline?
Working backwards from an expected mid to late September 2026 undergraduate deadline, or a mid February 2027 graduate deadline.
Right now, late July to August 2026. Order your apostilles. This is the only step you cannot compress: birth certificate or family register, graduation certificate, full transcript, and certified translations if they are not in English or Korean. Turnaround at a foreign ministry runs from two weeks to two months depending on the country. Simultaneously, register your TOPIK sitting if there is one you can still reach.
August 2026. Draft the personal statement and study plan. These are the two documents that carry the whole competency review if you have no language test score, and they are the only place NIIED sees you as a person rather than a transcript. Line up your recommender and give them the official Form, not a free format letter.
Early September 2026. The guidelines drop on the Study in Korea portal. Download the University Information file immediately and check that the exact departments you want still exist and still accept GKS applicants. Departments move in and out of the list every year. Confirm your country's quota and decide track.
Mid to late September 2026. Create your Study in Korea account early, not on deadline day. All GKS applications are now online only through the portal. Fill in the forms, upload scanned certificates, and submit well before the 18:00 KST cutoff. Korean Standard Time, not yours.
October 2026. If you were embassy track and failed the first round, pivot straight into the university track while it is still open. If you passed, prepare a fully assembled paper set: application checklist as the front cover, documents numbered and labelled in the top right corner, everything A4 or letter size.
November 2026 to January 2027. NIIED evaluation, then the university round, then your final university choice, then the scholar announcement. If you reach TOPIK 5 or 6 during this window, email the certificate to NIIED before the stated cutoff to be exempted from the language year.
February 2027 onward. Graduate applicants repeat the same sequence on the spring calendar.
For the 2027 graduate round the equivalent starting gun is around December 2026: same apostille lead time, same drafting work, plus a research proposal and a letter of invitation if you are applying to a research programme.
9.Can you apply to GKS 2027 and China's CSC in the same cycle?
Yes, and the calendars make it unusually easy. Nothing in the GKS guidelines bars you from holding applications to other governments' scholarships, and the two programs barely overlap in time.
The GKS undergraduate window sits in September and October 2026, with results in early January 2027. The Chinese Government Scholarship cycle then opens roughly in January and runs through March or April 2027, which means you already know your GKS outcome before most CSC deadlines close. Running both is a sequencing exercise rather than a conflict. Our CSC 2027-2028 guide covers that side of the calendar in detail.
The document work overlaps heavily, which is the real efficiency. Both systems want a notarised or authenticated highest degree certificate, an authenticated transcript, a study plan, and two or one recommendation letters. Order extra authenticated sets while you are already at the foreign ministry. The pieces that do not transfer: GKS requires proof of citizenship and family relationship for both your parents, which CSC does not ask for, and CSC requires a Foreigner Physical Examination Form on a specific Chinese template rather than the GKS Personal Medical Assessment form.
Where they genuinely diverge is the language year. GKS makes almost everyone complete a funded one year Korean programme and reach TOPIK 3 before the degree starts, while many CSC degree programmes are taught fully in English with no Chinese language year. That single structural difference should drive your ranking of the two if you are offered both. We break down stipends, coverage and the trade-offs side by side in the GKS vs CSC comparison.
One caution: if you accept a GKS award and later renounce it, you are permanently barred from GKS in future and your country's quota can shrink. Apply to both freely, but only accept the one you actually intend to take.
