GKS Scholarship 2027: Application Guide, Deadlines and Both Tracks

The 2027 undergraduate guidelines are now published. NIIED posted the official GKS-U announcement on September 9, 2026. This guide uses the English guidelines attachment marked 0914.

The embassy-track online application window was September 15, 2026 at 11:00 to September 30, 2026 at 18:00, Korea Standard Time (UTC+9). That window has ended. Applicants already in the process should follow their embassy's instructions for results and original documents.

The university track runs on individual university schedules within September–November 2026. The guidelines do not give every university the same closing date. NIIED's September 23 university-track notice includes a university-specific selection spreadsheet. Use it to find your institution, then read that university's current announcement for the deadline, submission method and extra documents. A national application period does not prove that your chosen university is accepting applications today.

Graduate applicants: this article has not verified a 2027 GKS-G announcement or deadline. Do not use these undergraduate dates for a master's or doctoral application, or move the 2026 graduate dates forward by one year. Check the official scholarships page for the relevant program.

Start with the checklist for your track in section IV of the 2027 guidelines. The forms include the application, personal statement, study plan, recommendation letter, applicant agreement, personal medical assessment, and consent to collect and use personal information.

Required certificates cover citizenship and family relationship, high-school graduation or expected graduation, and academic transcripts. Associate-degree applicants also need the applicable degree and transcript documents. Additional evidence depends on your circumstances, such as citizenship renunciation or Overseas Korean status. Language scores, awards and a passport copy have their own requirements in the checklist.

Embassy track: applications were submitted through Study in Korea. The recommendation letter is uploaded as a scanned copy prepared by the recommender. Candidates who pass the first round must provide originals by the embassy's deadline. Do not rely on the older advice that the recommendation letter is needed only after the first screening.

University track: submit the NIIED forms and certificates using the university's stated method. This may involve mail or another method; it is not a single online-only process. Check for additional university documents before sending your file.

Use your passport name consistently. Copy the university and department names from the official University Information files, and check every required signature.

The distinction is between forms you complete and certificates issued by an institution. Section IV of the 2027 guidelines gives the detailed rules.

• Completed application forms do not need an apostille or consular confirmation. Follow the original-signature requirements.
• Required certificates need an apostille or consular confirmation. For Apostille Convention countries, the guidelines direct applicants to use apostilles, while allowing consular confirmation for high-school graduation certificates and transcripts.
• Certificates in languages other than English or Korean need a certified translation. Authentication can be placed on the original or the certified translation, as the guidelines specify.
• Digitally issued required certificates still need authentication.
• An ordinary photocopy of an authenticated document is not sufficient. Read the permitted certified-copy exceptions before ordering copies.

The guidelines normally accept authentication without a stated expiry date if submitted within two years of authentication. Where an expiry date exists, that date matters. Unusual document situations should be checked with the receiving embassy or university.

Expected graduates must meet the December 31, 2026 graduation requirement and follow the instructions for submitting their final authenticated certificates. A school enrolment letter alone is not a substitute for all expected-graduation evidence.

For GKS-U 2027, the embassy track includes General, R-GKS, and Overseas Koreans & Adoptees programs. The university track includes UIC and Associate Degree programs. Their available subjects, institutions and eligibility differ, so choose a program that actually offers the degree you need.

The embassy handles the first selection round for its track. A participating university handles the first round for the university track. Both then send recommended applicants to NIIED. Embassy-track applicants also face a later university review.

Do not submit duplicate applications. The 2027 guidelines restrict applications across tracks, programs and universities. Embassy applicants who pass the first round, including backup candidates, cannot apply again through the university track. If you were unsuccessful at the embassy stage, check the applicable rules and the university's remaining deadline before considering another application.

A larger quota does not establish better odds for an individual applicant. CSC Path does not have verified applicant-to-place figures that would justify recommending one track as easier.

The 2027 undergraduate guidelines set these limits:

• General and Overseas Koreans & Adoptees embassy applicants: up to three universities, including at least one Type B university.
• R-GKS applicants: up to two Type B universities.
• University-track applicants: one university and one department.

Use the current University Information attachments to check the institution, department and track. Do not assume a university's general international-admissions list is also its GKS list. Department-level language and academic requirements can differ.

For embassy applicants, select universities you would be willing to attend. Passing NIIED does not guarantee that a preferred university will admit you.

NIIED reviews candidates recommended by embassies and universities. Embassy-track candidates then undergo university selection before the final decision. University-track candidates have already been reviewed by their nominating university.

The 2027 guidelines list January 7, 2027 as the expected final announcement date. Treat this as the published schedule, and check official notices for changes. An interview invitation, embassy nomination or NIIED-stage result is not the same as a final award.

Keep checking the email address and announcement channel used by your embassy or university. Original-document deadlines and acceptance instructions can require action before the final announcement.

Section V of the 2027 guidelines separates eligibility checks from competency review. Reviewers consider academic performance, language proficiency, academic activities, social and international contributions, future potential, and the completeness and authenticity of the application. Document review and an oral interview form part of that assessment.

The guidelines include language-score tables. Use the current table, especially for TOEFL iBT: it distinguishes tests taken before and after the January 2026 scoring change. Do not use a score conversion copied from an earlier cycle.

A practical preparation step is to connect your study plan to the department you selected and support claims about your experience with evidence. No essay formula or language score guarantees selection.

If you already applied through an embassy: follow that embassy's result notice and prepare the original documents it requests. The national online window has closed.

If you are considering the university track: read the university-specific selection information and the institution's own announcement first. Record the exact deadline and time zone, whether documents must arrive by that date, the submission address or portal, and any additional requirements. Only then commit to translation, authentication or courier costs.

If you want a graduate degree: prepare your academic records and research interests, but wait for verified 2027 GKS-G instructions before treating any dates or document list as final.

Keep a copy of the notice and the version of the guidelines you used. Check for corrections before submitting.

You can research both routes and compare their degrees, language requirements and deadlines. GKS and CSC have separate application systems and award conditions.

This guide does not establish a blanket right to hold both awards or accept overlapping funding. Before accepting an offer, read the applicable scholarship agreement and ask the awarding body about any restriction. Follow withdrawal requirements if you choose a different award.
