Hainan Medical University: Scholarships for International Students

Programme offered to international students

One degree programme: Clinical Medicine (临床医学), undergraduate level, taught in Chinese (汉语), length of schooling 5 years. A second route is listed: 1 year (Chinese language training) + 5 years.

Tuition

Undergraduates: 20,500 CNY per academic year (本科生：20500 元/学年) — undergraduate rate only; no postgraduate tuition figure is published in this brochure.

Registration/application fee

400 CNY per person, non-refundable. Listed in the fee table as 报名费 (registration fee) with the English gloss "Registration fee 400 RMB per person", and repeated under other miscellaneous fees as "Application fee: 400 RMB per person (Please confirm all application materials are correct before payment. The application fee is non-refundable)."

Physical examination fee

Approximately 400 CNY per person. Stated to be a reference amount only, paid by the student directly to the relevant department after arrival.

Residence permit fee

Approximately 400 CNY per person per year. Reference amount only, paid directly to the relevant department after arrival.

Comprehensive insurance premium

Approximately 800 CNY per person per year. Reference amount only, paid directly to the relevant department after arrival.

Accommodation — triple room

2,800 CNY per person per academic year, or 300 CNY per person per month. Bathroom available, with air conditioner, water heater and basic furniture in the room; internet and utility fees are at the tenant's own expense; accommodation type is arranged subject to actual availability.

Accommodation — quadruple room

2,100 CNY per person per academic year, or 240 CNY per person per month. Same room facilities note as the triple room.

Accommodation rules

International students are required to live in student dormitories in their first year without special reasons. From the second year, students may apply and submit rental documents, after which they may rent private accommodation near campus. All fees are settled in Renminbi (CNY).

Language requirement

HSK Level 4 or above certificate for programmes taught in Chinese (汉语授课专业要求 HSK4 及以上证书).

Age limits

Age 18–35 years old; the age limit may be appropriately relaxed for self-funded students (自费生可适当放宽).

Nationality and passport requirement

Non-Chinese citizens holding a valid ordinary foreign passport, abiding by Chinese laws, regulations and university rules, honest and trustworthy, in good physical health. The passport personal information page must be provided with passport validity of more than 1 year. Those who were originally Chinese citizens and later acquired foreign nationality must also provide a household registration cancellation certificate and proof of foreign nationality acquisition.

Application documents

Personal statement and study plan; notarised high school diploma or equivalent academic certificate; notarised high school transcript; HSK score report; passport personal information page (validity more than 1 year); HMU International Student Admission Application Form (downloaded from the School of International Education website); personal physical examination report; notarised certificate of no criminal record; other supporting materials at the applicant's discretion; one standard colour passport-style photograph (max 200 KB, jpg/jpeg/png); CSCA score report; and the scanned HMU Financial Guarantee Letter for International Students with supporting financial documents.

CSCA (来华留学本科入学学业水平测试) requirement

A CSCA score report is required: "来华留学本科入学学业水平测试（CSCA）成绩单（数学为必考科目，选择化学、物理作为附加科目）" — Mathematics is a compulsory subject; Chemistry or Physics can be selected as an additional subject. This is item 9 of the undergraduate document checklist, so the requirement is stated in the 2026 brochure; no minimum score is published.

1+5 route progression rule

For students under the 1+5-year programme, those who obtain the HSK Level 4 certificate after one year may apply to start undergraduate studies in Clinical Medicine. Those who fail to obtain the certificate may choose to leave the university or follow the admission requirements for the 5-year programme students.

5-year route probation rule

For 5-year programme students who do not hold an HSK Level 4 certificate upon admission but possess corresponding Chinese proficiency, they may apply to take the Standards for Chinese Language Proficiency examination organised by the university. Those who pass obtain admission eligibility and are allowed a one-year probationary study in Clinical Medicine, during which they must obtain the HSK Level 4 certificate; failure results in cancellation of probationary eligibility.

Scholarships offered

Two scholarship programmes: the Hainan Provincial Government Scholarship for International Students (海南省政府国际学生奖学金) and the ASEAN Scholarship (东盟奖学金). Funding duration for undergraduates is 4–6 years, corresponding to the length of the academic programme; for master's students it is 3 years. The scholarship covers tuition fees, accommodation fees and medical insurance premiums; all other expenses shall be borne by the students themselves.

Scholarship eligibility conditions

Applicants must be qualified to apply for the university's degree-seeking international student programmes and must not be recipients of the Chinese Government Scholarship or any other types of scholarships.

Scholarship annual review

Scholarship recipients must participate in the annual scholarship review after enrolment. Those who fail the review shall have their scholarship eligibility suspended or revoked.

Scholarship amount and quota

No monetary amount and no specific quota number are published. The separate scholarship notice states only 名额若干 (a number of quotas) for the Hainan Provincial Government Scholarship for International Students and the ASEAN Scholarship; the 2026 brochure likewise publishes only coverage (tuition, accommodation, medical insurance), not an amount.

2026 intake deadlines

20 May 2026 — deadline for applications for Hainan Government Scholarships for international students; 15 July 2026 — deadline for self-funded student applications; 15 September 2026 — deadline for registration.

Intake status as at 24 September 2026

Closed. All three 2026 dated deadlines (20 May, 15 July and 15 September 2026) had passed, and no 2027 brochure had been published — the 招生简章 listing page's most recent entry was the 2026 brochure dated 2026-01-27. The 2027 intake status is unknown.

Graduation certificate naming caution

The major name printed on the university's graduation and degree certificates is "clinical medicine". Applicants for the 1+5-year and 5-year Clinical Medicine programmes are advised to verify with the competent authorities in their home country in advance whether they can obtain corresponding professional practice qualifications after graduation.
