Founded in May 1950 as the PLA Russian Training School under the Southwest Military and Political University, it took the name Sichuan International Studies University in April 2013 and is one of the first four state-run foreign-language institutes in China. Despite its name (a historical holdover from before 1997, when Chongqing was part of Sichuan province), it is physically located in Shapingba District, Chongqing, not Chengdu. It is the only university in Southwest China specializing solely in foreign language studies.
