CSC Scholarship Photo Size and Upload Rules

The CSC portal and university portals can request different ID-photo sizes, backgrounds and file limits, so the active upload field controls.
1.What photo size does the CSC scholarship application require?
The public CSC applicant guide requires an ID photo but does not state one universal pixel size or file-size limit in its supporting-document list (official CSC online application guide). Use the dimensions and limits shown in the active CSC upload field for your application.
Do not assume the same file will satisfy the university portal. Current university instructions differ. Shanghai Ocean University's 2026 CSC guide requests a one-inch electronic personal photo in JPG format, while Shanghai University of Political Science and Law requests an ID photo larger than 295 × 413 pixels and no more than 200 KB (SHOU 2026 guide; SHUPL 2026 CSC guide).
2.Why do CSC and university photo instructions differ?
A CSC application can pass through more than one system. The CSC portal collects the scholarship form and supporting documents, while a university may separately collect admission or pre-admission materials. Each system can define its own upload rules.
China Academy of Art's 2026 CSC Type B guide shows the difference inside one application process. It asks for a recent 35 mm × 45 mm white-background photograph on the Chinese Government Scholarship application form, then separately asks for a 35 mm × 53 mm personal ID photo for the university system (CAA 2026 CSC guide). Follow the CSC and university portal-order guide and prepare each upload for the field where it will be used.
3.What background and pose should the photo use?
Follow the exact notice. CAA's 2026 CSC guide requires a color photo with a white background, no hat, and the head occupying at least two-thirds of the image. Chang'an University's 2026 instructions require a recent, front-facing, color, bareheaded passport-style photo and explicitly reject black-and-white photos, artistic photos, selfies and other non-standard images (CAA 2026 CSC guide; Chang'an University 2026 guide).
These are current university rules, not a basis for changing a different portal's stated background. If the active field says white, blue or another specification, use that field's requirement rather than a generic passport-photo rule.
4.Which file format, pixel size and file size should you use?
There is no single combination that is safe for every university portal. CAA requires JPG, 100–500 KB, at least 320 × 240 pixels, with a 4:3 aspect-ratio instruction. SHUPL accepts JPG, JPEG or PNG, sets a 200 KB maximum, and requires more than 295 × 413 pixels. Yanshan University asks for a white-background digital photo between 100 and 200 KB for its 2026 CSC Silk Road application.
Use the CAA, SHUPL or Yanshan rule only for that institution's system (CAA guide; SHUPL guide; Yanshan University 2026 guide). The portal's error message or help text controls when it gives a narrower limit.
5.Is the ID photo the same as the passport information page?
No. The official CSC online guide lists the ID photo and the passport homepage as separate supporting documents. Shanghai Ocean University's 2026 CSC checklist also separates the personal photo from the passport photocopy, and Sun Yat-sen University's 2026 Bilateral Program guide requests both a valid ordinary passport and a personal profile photo (CSC online guide; SHOU guide; SYSU 2026 Bilateral guide).
Upload a clean ID-photo file in the photo field and a clear scan of the passport information page in the passport field. The CSC application-form guide explains the supporting-document stage, while the passport guide covers identity and validity issues.
6.Can you reuse one photo across the CSC and university portals?
Yes, but only when the same file meets every stated requirement. Compare the background and pose first. Then check recency, physical size, pixel dimensions, aspect ratio, format and file-size limit before reusing it. A file accepted by one system is not proof that another system will accept it.
Keep the original high-quality photo and export separate copies when the portals differ. Name each copy by its destination so you do not upload a 200 KB university version into a field that requires another size. Do not stretch the image, replace the background carelessly or submit a screenshot of a photo; prepare a clean export from the original.
7.What should you check before uploading the photo?
Open each active portal and record the requirement beside the upload field. Check that the photo is recent where required, front-facing, in color, bareheaded, on the stated background, and within the accepted dimensions, format and file-size range. Confirm that the ID photo is in the photo field and the passport scan is in the passport field. Preview the upload after compression to make sure the face is sharp and the image has not been distorted.
