CSC Scholarship at Huaqiao University: Application Guide

Huaqiao University is unusual among Chinese universities in that its founding purpose was not domestic. Established in Quanzhou in 1960 and today directly affiliated with the United Front Work Department of the CPC Central Committee, with joint support from the Ministry of Education and the Fujian provincial government, HQU exists primarily to educate overseas Chinese and students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, alongside international students more broadly. Its own figures put total enrolment around 45,000, of whom roughly 9,000 come from those communities. For an applicant, the practical consequence is that the international student infrastructure here is mature rather than improvised: dedicated admissions offices on both campuses, a long-running Chinese language and preparatory pipeline, and a scholarship menu that is noticeably deeper and more granular than at comparably sized Chinese universities.

On academic standing, be realistic. HQU is not a former 985 or 211 institution and is not in the Double First Class list, so it will not carry the brand weight of a national flagship on a CV. What it does have is real research depth in a few areas: the university reports Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science and Computer Science in the ESI global top 0.5 percent, with Environment/Ecology and Social Sciences in the top 1 percent, plus a co-established National Key Laboratory and over 100 national and provincial research platforms. Business, economics and international trade are the strongest teaching-side offer for international students, since that is where the English-medium undergraduate track sits. If your target field is one of the ESI-strong engineering or materials areas, HQU is a serious option; if it is outside those, weigh it against Fujian's other options, notably Xiamen University.

The funding picture is where HQU earns its search traffic. It is a confirmed Chinese Government Scholarship host under agency number 10385 on the Type B university-postgraduate route, but the more distinctive opportunity is the layer beneath: the Fujian Provincial Government Scholarship at 30,000 RMB, an Overseas Students Special Scholarship covering half or full tuition, an Outstanding Teachers Scholarship covering four years of tuition, and a set of donor-named awards (Sangzi, Lin Wei, Wang Bincheng, Huang Zhongxian) with tiered amounts, several of them targeted at Southeast Asian or overseas Chinese applicants. Combined with low published tuition, around 14,000 RMB per year for regular undergraduate programmes and 28,000 for English-medium ones, a partially funded place at HQU can be genuinely affordable even when a full CSC award does not come through. The two timelines to hold in your head are different: the CGS postgraduate route registers around February, while self-funded undergraduate applications ran to 31 May for the 2026 intake.
