CSC Scholarship at Shanghai Jiao Tong University: Application Guide

CSC agency number

Shanghai Jiao Tong University's agency number is 10248. The university states: 'When applying on the CSC website, please make sure to choose Scholarship Type B, as well as fill in SJTU's agency number "10248" and upload the pre-admission notice of SJTU'.

CSC application channels

Incoming international graduate students have two channels for the Chinese Government Scholarship: through SJTU as Type B, or through the Chinese Embassy or Consulate in their home country as Type A. Applicants may choose only one channel, because submitting duplicate applications through multiple channels is not permitted.

CSC embassy-channel timing

For applications made through Chinese embassies or consulates, the university states the schedule varies by country and is 'usually from November to April', and directs applicants to consult the embassy or consulate for its own schedule, agency number and programme categories.

CSC accommodation policy

SJTU does not provide free dormitories. Chinese Government Scholarship recipients instead receive an accommodation subsidy: CNY 1,100 per month for undergraduate students, CNY 1,320 per month for general scholars and CNY 1,650 per month for senior scholars.

Shanghai Government Scholarship integration

The Shanghai Government Scholarship has been integrated into the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Scholarship. International undergraduate and graduate students intending to apply for it do not submit a separate application; the scholarship application has been combined with the programme application and applicants select 'Apply for scholarships through SJTU' in the scholarship section of the application at apply.sjtu.edu.cn.

SJTU Scholarship classes for Chinese-taught undergraduates

Three classes over a four-year period. First-Class covers tuition, a living allowance of CNY 2,500 per month, an accommodation subsidy of CNY 1,100 per month and insurance. Second-Class covers tuition, the CNY 1,100 per month accommodation subsidy and insurance. Third-Class covers the CNY 1,100 per month accommodation subsidy and insurance. Recipients must be officially admitted by SJTU and may not hold another scholarship at the same time, and results are announced together with admission results.

SJTU Scholarship classes for English- and French-taught undergraduates

Three classes over a four-year period. First-Class covers tuition, a living allowance of CNY 2,500 per month, an accommodation subsidy of CNY 1,100 per month and insurance. Second-Class covers 50% of tuition, the CNY 1,100 per month accommodation subsidy and insurance. Third-Class covers 25% of tuition and insurance.

SJTU Scholarship coverage for graduate programmes

SJTU scholarships are available for international doctoral programmes and include a monthly stipend, tuition waiver, group comprehensive insurance in China and an accommodation subsidy covering partial accommodation expenses. The International Master's programme offers a Master's SJTU Scholarship (monthly stipend, standard tuition waiver, group comprehensive insurance and accommodation subsidy) and a Tuition Waiver Scholarship (standard tuition waiver and group comprehensive insurance). Some schools additionally offer school or college scholarships, described in the respective school or college prospectus.

International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship programmes

SJTU hosts the award for a Bachelor's Degree in Chinese (International Chinese Language Education) and a Master's Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL), plus non-degree One-Academic-Year and One-Semester study programmes. The bachelor's route requires a senior high school diploma, HSK Level 5 at 200 and HSKK Intermediate at 60, and also requires pre-admission to SJTU. The MTCSOL requires a bachelor's degree, HSK Level 6 at 180 and HSKK Advanced at 60, with priority for applicants holding a teaching-institution work contract. The one-year programme requires HSK Level 3 at 210 with priority for HSKK holders; the one-semester programme requires HSK Level 3 at 180 and an HSKK score.

Outreach scholarship

SJTU publishes the Asian Future Leaders Scholarship Program (AFLSP) under its Outreach Scholarship heading. AFLSP gives students opportunities to study abroad at leading universities in Greater China, Japan and Korea, and the programme was inspired by the achievements of Rhodes Scholars and the Schwarzman Scholars programme.

China Link Scholarship Program

SJTU notes that the China Scholarship Council has established the China Link Scholarship Program for international students hoping to engage in academic and research activities in China, and that accommodation is provided as a subsidy of CNY 1,320 per month for general scholars and CNY 1,650 per month for senior scholars rather than as a free dormitory.

Chinese-language award names

The Chinese-language scholarship page of SJTU's International Student Center lists the awards open to international students as 中国政府奖学金 (Chinese Government Scholarship), 上海市政府奖学金 (Shanghai Government Scholarship), 上海交通大学奖学金 (SJTU Scholarship) and 国际中文教师奖学金（孔子学院奖学金）(International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship / Confucius Institute Scholarship).

Excellence Scholarship programme

SJTU runs the Chinese Government Excellence Scholarship programme (中国政府来华留学卓越奖学金项目), administered by the China Scholarship Council. At SJTU it covers three English-taught master's routes: the full-English Master of Business Administration in International Business at Antai College of Economics and Management, the Chinese Law LLM at KoGuan Law School, and the Chinese Politics and Economy master's at the School of International and Public Affairs.

Bai Xian Asia Institute scholarship

SJTU publishes the Bai Xian Asia Institute Asian Future Leaders Scholarship (百贤亚洲未来领袖奖学金) as a separate award on the scholarship pages of its International Student Center.

Undergraduate scholarship application mechanism

Chinese-taught undergraduate applicants apply for SJTU scholarships by selecting the 'Apply for scholarship' option when completing the online application form, and excellent students are awarded scholarships on the published class terms. English- and French-taught undergraduate applicants are considered for scholarships after completing the application procedure on the Common Application system.
