Selected for CSC? Your Pre-Departure Checklist (2026)

Winners download the Admission Notice and JW201 visa form directly from the CSC system; embassies notify but the documents live in your CGSIS account (official embassy notice). Check every field the day you download: name exactly matching your passport, correct university/program/duration. Errors take weeks to fix, so report them to the university's admission office immediately, not at the visa counter.

The Foreigner Physical Examination Form is valid 6 months from the exam date. If yours was done for the application in December–January, it may expire before or shortly after arrival, and universities verify it during registration formalities (our form guide). If it will lapse, redo it in August with all original lab/X-ray/ECG reports attached so China-side verification (~¥60 in Beijing) replaces a full re-exam (~¥430).

Apply at least one month before travel (official guideline). You need: passport (6+ months validity, 2 blank pages), the original + copy of the Admission Notice and JW201, photo to spec (48×33mm white background), COVA online form, fingerprints at your visa center. The stipend does NOT arrive on day one. Registration timing affects the first payment (register by the 15th of the month to get that month's full allowance, per standard scholarship rules), so bring enough for the first 4-6 weeks: realistically ¥3,000–5,000 covering deposits, bedding, SIM, food, and surprises. Most CSC awards (check yours) do not cover airfare, so book August flights early; direct routes fill fast. Airport pickup: many universities run pickup windows during registration days; check the university's arrival notice and register for it.

Clock 1: address registration within 24 hours of arrival (your dorm does it automatically; private housing means a police station visit). Clock 2: residence permit within 30 days: the X1 is only an entry ticket; your university's international office will walk you through the Exit-Entry Administration application (passport, admission notice, JW201, health record, registration form, ~¥400-1,000 fee, 7-15 working days during which the PSB holds your passport) (university guidance). Don't book any international trips in the first month.

Physical folder: passport, admission notice (original), JW201 (original), physical exam form + ALL original reports, degree certificates + notarized translations, police clearance, 12+ passport photos, university's registration notice.
