JW201 vs JW202: What Each Form Means and Which One You Will Get

Both are official "Visa Application for Study in China" forms, and you need one of them (plus your Admission Notice) to apply for an X1 or X2 student visa at a Chinese embassy or consulate. The visa officer will not process a study visa without one.

The difference is who is paying:

• JW201: issued to students funded by a Chinese government program, above all the CSC scholarship, plus MOFCOM and similar state-funded awards.
• JW202: issued to self-funded students and students on non-government funding (university scholarships, external sponsors, family funding).

Functionally they are equal at the visa counter. Nobody gets a "better" visa from one or the other; the X1/X2 decision depends on your program length, not on which JW form you hold. See our X1 vs X2 visa guide for that side of the process.

JW201 comes through the government scholarship system. After the CSC finalizes your award, the form is generated in the application system (campuschina.org / CGSIS) and you download it together with your electronic Admission Notice. Type A awardees sometimes receive it through the dispatching authority in their home country instead.

JW202 is arranged by the admitting university. The international students office applies to its provincial education authority, which issues the form; the university then couriers it to you or provides an electronic copy alongside your admission documents.

Timing: both usually arrive in the June to August window before a September intake. Universities send documents in batches, so a classmate receiving theirs first does not mean yours was refused.

If you applied for the CSC scholarship and your download package contains a JW201, the government is funding you: that is what the form exists for. If the same package contains a JW202, the university admitted you but the scholarship route did not come through, and you are being processed as self-funded or on a different award.

Every results season, applicants with a portal still showing "Submitted" discover their real outcome this way. Take errors seriously: the embassy checks the form against your passport.

• Name or passport-number mismatch: request a corrected form before booking a visa appointment. JW201 corrections go back through the scholarship channel (CSC via the university); JW202 corrections go through the university's international office.
• Lost or damaged form: universities can normally reissue a JW202; a JW201 reissue goes through the same channel that generated it. Ask immediately, reissues take weeks in peak season.
• Wrong form type for your funding: if you hold a government award but received a JW202 (or the reverse), contact the international office before applying for the visa; consulates do reject applications where the form contradicts the stated funding.
• Photocopies: bring the original (or the officially issued electronic version) plus a copy; requirements vary by consulate.
