1.The headline: Yunnan University (from ¥8,000/year)
Per its official 2024 admissions brochure, Yunnan University (Kunming, a Double First-Class university) charges academic master's tuition of ¥8,000/year, PhD ¥10,000 (¥15,000 English-taught), and bachelor's from ¥10,000 (humanities/economics/law) to ¥15,000 (arts/medicine) (official brochure PDF). Kunming's mild climate and low living costs compound the saving.
2.The verified cheap list (bachelor's)
From official pages: Inner Mongolia University (Hohhot, Double First-Class): ¥12,000 arts / ¥13,600 STEM, dorms ¥4,000–8,000/yr (official); Heilongjiang University (Harbin): ¥15,500, dorms from ~¥21/day (official fees); Yanshan University (Qinhuangdao): ¥15,700 (official); Guangxi University (Nanning): arts ¥11,000–13,000 per its official FAQ (older document; re-confirm current rates: PDF); GDUFE (Guangzhou): English-taught International Business ¥19,000 (official). Realistic all-in at, say, Inner Mongolia or Heilongjiang University: tuition ¥12,000–15,500 + shared dorm ¥4,000–8,000 + living ~¥1,500–2,000/month (¥18,000–24,000/yr) ≈ ¥34,000–47,500/year total (~$4,700–6,600), less than tuition alone at many Western universities. Cut it further: freshman/entrance scholarships knock 10–100% off tuition at many of these exact universities (university scholarships guide), and provincial awards stack the odds (hidden gems).
5.Quality check: are cheap universities 'worth it'?
Yunnan and Inner Mongolia University are both Double First-Class (China's national excellence scheme); the low price reflects regional cost structures and enrollment strategy, not accreditation. Degrees carry the same MOE recognition as Beijing degrees (degree recognition guide). What DOES differ: smaller international cohorts, more Chinese-language immersion (often a plus), fewer English-taught program options, so check the program language before applying.
6.How to apply on a budget
1. Shortlist 2–3 from this list + check current fees on the university's own admission page (fees update yearly; our figures are from the cited official documents). 2. Apply early and tick every scholarship box in the application. 3. Budget the side costs honestly: application fees ¥0–800 (no-fee list), physical exam, visa, flight. 4. If you're CSC-eligible, apply CSC Type B at one of these too; cheap universities often have spare CSC quota (hidden gems).
