Cheapest Self-Funded Universities in China (Real Fees)

A master's degree for ¥8,000 a year (about $1,100) at a Double First-Class university. Verified low-tuition options nobody's agent will tell you about.
1.The headline: Yunnan University (from ¥8,000/year)
Per its official 2024 admissions brochure, Yunnan University (Kunming, a Double First-Class university) charges academic master's tuition of ¥8,000/year, PhD ¥10,000 (¥15,000 English-taught), and bachelor's from ¥10,000 (humanities/economics/law) to ¥15,000 (arts/medicine) (official brochure PDF). Kunming's mild climate and low living costs compound the saving.
2.The verified cheap list (bachelor's)
From official pages: Inner Mongolia University (Hohhot, Double First-Class): ¥12,000 arts / ¥13,600 STEM, dorms ¥4,000–8,000/yr (official); Heilongjiang University (Harbin): ¥15,500, dorms from ~¥21/day (official fees); Yanshan University (Qinhuangdao): ¥15,700 (official); Guangxi University (Nanning): arts ¥11,000–13,000 per its official FAQ (older document; re-confirm current rates: PDF); GDUFE (Guangzhou): English-taught International Business ¥19,000 (official). Master's: Guangxi ¥15,000–18,000; Inner Mongolia ¥16,000–18,400.
3.The contrast: what big names cost
USTC ¥26,000 (UG) (official); NPU's 2026 guide lists ¥22,000 for Chinese-medium and ¥25,000 for English-medium undergraduate study (official); UCAS's 2025 graduate call listed master's ¥30,000 and PhD ¥34,000–40,000 (official, re-check the current intake). Compare the exact program, teaching language, housing and city budget rather than assuming a fixed regional discount.
4.Total yearly budget at a cheap university
Realistic all-in at, say, Inner Mongolia or Heilongjiang University: tuition ¥12,000–15,500 + shared dorm ¥4,000–8,000 + living ~¥1,500–2,000/month (¥18,000–24,000/yr) ≈ ¥34,000–47,500/year total (~$4,700–6,600), less than tuition alone at many Western universities. University or provincial awards may reduce the cost, but verify current benefits and whether awards can be combined before budgeting (university scholarships guide; hidden gems).
5.Quality check: are cheap universities 'worth it'?
Yunnan and Inner Mongolia University are both Double First-Class institutions. Price alone does not establish program quality, recognition, teaching language, cohort size, supervision, facilities, or graduate outcomes. Check the exact program curriculum, faculty, degree-awarding institution, language, and recognition path before applying (degree recognition guide).
6.How to apply on a budget
1. Shortlist 2–3 programs and check the current fee, teaching language, deadline and application system on each university's own page. 2. Apply only for scholarships explicitly offered to your intake and confirm whether parallel applications are allowed. 3. Budget application fees, medical checks, visa, flight, insurance, housing deposits and living costs. 4. If a university publishes a current CSC Type B route for your program and nationality, follow that notice separately; low tuition does not prove unused scholarship quota.
