CSC Scholarship From Nigeria: BEA Suspended, Your Real Route
By CSC Path Editorial, checked against official CSC and university sources.
Most Nigerian scholarship blogs still point to the BEA route, but the government confirmed in April 2026 it's suspended. Here's what actually works now.
1.Important: the BEA route is suspended
Nigeria's government-nominated pipeline to Chinese government scholarships ran through the Bilateral Education Agreement (BEA) scheme, administered by the Federal Scholarship Board (now the Department of Scholarship Awards) under the Federal Ministry of Education. In an official press release dated April 30, 2026, the government confirmed the BEA scheme is not reinstated; the ₦1.764bn line in the 2026 budget is a procedural rollover funding existing scholars only (official FMINO release; Premium Times). Any site advertising a "2026/27 BEA China scholarship" is out of date or a scam. Context worth knowing: the scheme's final years saw chronic stipend arrears (cut from $500 to $220/month, with scholars reporting thousands of dollars outstanding, per the TheCable investigation).
2.The route that works: direct CSC applications (Type B)
CGS eligibility requires only citizenship of a country other than China; Nigerians qualify to apply directly (official 2026/27 framework). Type B: apply straight to a designated Chinese university via campuschina.org with that university's agency number; the university nominates you to CSC. Since 2026/27, ALL applicants need a pre-admission document from the university (pre-admission notice or professor invitation; see our letters guide), and bachelor's applicants must take the CSCA exam at csca.cn (official notice; our CSCA guide). Note: no open Type A call from the Chinese Embassy in Abuja could be verified for recent cycles; with BEA suspended, Type B is the documented path.
3.Document legalization from Nigeria
Nigeria is not a party to the Apostille Convention, so the traditional chain applies: "Documents issued in Nigeria and to be used in mainland China shall firstly be notarized and legalized by the competent authorities in Nigeria, and then be legalized by Chinese Embassy or Consulate" (Chinese Embassy Abuja). For the student visa specifically, the embassy requires the final academic qualification "authenticated by the Ministry of Education of Nigeria" (embassy visa guidelines). For the CSC application itself you upload notarized scans; plan the full legalization for the visa/enrollment stage.
4.Visa: where and what
X1 (study >180 days) applications go through the China Visa Application Centre: CVAC Abuja (Churchgate Plaza, Central Business Area; serves FCT + 16 northern/central states) or CVAC Lagos (The Manor, Lekki Phase 1; serves 20 southern states) (consular districts). X1 documents: admission notice copy, JW201/JW202 copy, MoE-authenticated qualification, proof of funds (US$2,500/year) or scholarship certificate, physical examination form; COVA online form first; ~4 working days; single-entry fee ₦10,500 (embassy guidelines). After arrival: residence permit within 30 days; the embassy also lists a consular-authenticated police character certificate.
5.Nigeria-specific pitfalls
Name-order mismatches between WAEC/NIN/passport cause verification problems; CSC documents must match your passport's English name exactly; WAEC has a formal amendment process (original certificate, affidavit, principal's letter, birth certificate, ₦10,000; see WAEC official). Fraud: official programs never charge processing fees to "secure" a scholarship; the old BEA ads themselves warned "beware of fraudsters"; the CSC application is free on campuschina.org and only universities charge application fees on their own portals (our fees guide). Timing: Type B windows run roughly January–April; the pre-admission document hunt starts months earlier.
6.Timeline for 2027-28 from Nigeria
Expected pattern (2027-28 dates not yet published; verify when announced): CSC cycle opens ~late October 2026 → contact universities for pre-admission documents from September–November → CSCA sittings for bachelor's applicants ~December-January → university Type B deadlines January–April 2027 → results July-August 2027 → CVAC visa → September 2027 enrollment. Watch education.gov.ng in case BEA policy changes, but don't plan around it.
