Quick answer

Kenya's route has a step most countries don't: after ministry shortlisting, nominated candidates sit a written exam AND interview at the Chinese Embassy. The full verified process.

1.Route 1: the Ministry of Education route, mandatory for Type A

The official announcement is explicit: "The Ministry of Education is the dispatching Agent for the Chinese Government Scholarships. It is mandatory for all interested applicants to go through the Ministry's preliminary selection process" (official 2026/27 announcement PDF). The 2026/27 cycle: 10 scholarships (UG/master's/PhD); apply online at campuschina.org (Type A, agency number 4041) AND deliver hard copies (CSC form, the Ministry's own application form, physical exam form, certified copies of ID/certificates/transcripts/birth certificate/passport) to the Director of Higher Education, Teleposta Towers 27th floor, by the deadline; last cycle's was November 28, 2025, 5:00 pm. The previous cycle offered 17 scholarships with a December 6 deadline, so seat counts and dates move each year.

2.The step nobody warns you about: embassy exam + interview

Nominated candidates "sit a written examination and interview organized by the Chinese Embassy" (same official announcement). Plan to be available December–March, and treat the exam like a real assessment; your ministry nomination is not the award.

3.Eligibility from Kenya (verified)

Undergraduate: KCSE mean grade B plain, aged ≤25, KCSE completed within the last 3 years. Master's: at least Second-Class Upper, under 35. PhD: relevant master's, under 40. Chinese-taught programs need HSK3 (UG) / HSK4 (postgrad); English-taught follow each university's IELTS/TOEFL rules. Study plan ≥200 words (UG) / ≥800 (postgrad); Certificate of Good Conduct; passport valid beyond March of the enrollment year. Foreign academic certificates must be recognized by the Commission for University Education (CUE) before applying. New: bachelor's applicants must take the CSCA exam; last cycle's sittings were December 21, 2025 and January 25, 2026 (our CSCA guide). All from the official announcement PDF above.

4.Route 2: YES program + direct Type B

Two more doors: the Youth of Excellence Scheme (YES), with 200 places globally for English-taught master's, full scholarship, applied directly on the CSC portal (Type A, agency code 1563) by March 31 with a pre-admission letter required (Chinese Embassy Nairobi notice); and standard Type B direct university applications (the university's own agency number, deadlines January–April; browse the universities directory to build a list). Both skip the ministry queue; with only ~10 bilateral seats, serious applicants should run Type B in parallel (our letters guide).

5.Legalization and visa from Nairobi

Kenya is not an Apostille member (HCCH table): notary → Kenya MFA authentication (Verbal Note) → Chinese Embassy legalization (KES 1,800 civil documents, 4 working days; see the official embassy page). X1 visas: CVASC Nairobi, 7th Floor, The Chancery, Valley Road (online at bio.visaforchina.cn/NBO3_EN; see the embassy notice), with the admission notice + JW201 from the CSC system.

6.Timeline + pitfalls for 2027-28

Pattern: ministry advert ~late October–November 2026 (watch education.go.ke/scholarships and MyGov), ministry deadline ~late November–early December, CSCA sittings December/January, embassy exam+interview early 2027, results mid-2027. Pitfalls: skipping ministry preliminary selection = disqualified; KCSE older than 3 years = ineligible for UG; missing both CSCA sittings kills undergraduate applications; Certificate of Good Conduct takes DCI processing time; start it early.

Ten bilateral seats is a narrow door: our $50 shortlisting session finds your strongest Type B backups, and the Full CSC Package ($700) runs everything.
